"These pieces came into being as a result of light. Light falling onto a wall in Toulouse. That light produced colours on the wall that changed the course of my artistic life.

Oils were the main medium for my work before this change, but I began to find the restriction of portraiture confining. The light and colours in Toulouse inspired me to work in a more abstract, organic style. The freedom and flow of expression had been in my hands, waiting. It just needed the breathtaking light of Southern France to take shape.

There are inherent boundaries and formal borders when working figuratively. Seeing visual relationships in this new light enabled a crossing of these borders.

There is a definite tension at the edge of the representational. In the past, I have often felt the figurative works were akin to beautiful whispers. These pieces allow me to finally shout. These pieces dissolve the tension.
